Soaking up the Sun cover/tutorial
A fan on Youtube, Veronvivian, posted this video (that Alyssa tweeted), teaching all of us how to play Soaking up the Sun. It’s honestly quite accurate, but there’s no bridge in it. Even if Soaking up the Sun has been out for more than 3 weeks, Liz Kelly Nelson, from Zap2it, still talked(wrote) about it! She presented the single and did a new interview with Alyssa, which was more casual than her usual “professional/career driven” interviews. She talks about her best friend Felicia, Matthew Gray Gubler, and her first kiss. Check it out!
Alyssa Bernal’s path to pop stardom has been a little unusual, but hardly unheard of. Like Justin Bieber, she got her start uploading covers of songs to YouTube, where’s she’s now one of the top 30 most-subscribed to musicians on the video-sharing site.
Last week, Alyssa released the single “Soaking Up the Sun” from her new self-titled EP. We caught up with Alyssa and she was kind enough to answer our Celeb Slam Book questions. Read on to find out more about the 22-year-old singer/songwriter.
Tell us one thing the general public doesn’t know about you:
I was a competitive cheerleader for 11 years.Describe your daily routine:
Wake up, brush teeth, shower etc, check my email, play with my dogs, try and get it a little cardio in, If I’m not too lazy at the moment. Then maybe play around on my guitar and get inspired to write a song. Run some errands. Have a random jam session and photo shoot just for fun. Then do some gigs if I have any that evening. Nothing too crazy yet!If you had to choose another career, what would you be?
Probably something in fashion. Like, designing clothes. Or maybe even a small business; like a bookstore or coffee shop!If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?

A family friend in high school and it was terrible. I had no clue what I was doing. Ha ha.What super power would you like to have?

We’re the girls dancing in the corner of the party without a care while all the other girls are standing there looking pretty — ha ha. She’s the only one who gets my dry humor. I love what’s been going on these days. First, those new photoshoot pictures, and now, more pics accompanied by an interview! She was recently signed by StarTrak/Interscope and her single Soak up the Sun is already garnering acclaim. ThatRaw.com recently caught up with Alyssa for an in depth interview.
Alyssa Bernal first made her debut on YouTube and she was noticed by Pharrell Williams, one of the top ten producers in music known for spotting emerging talent. The way that Alyssa came on to the scene has the music industry buzzing. Pharrell Williams tried to contact Alyssa after seeing her online music videos and sent her several emails with no response. Pharrell finally got Alyssa’s attention by calling her school and speaking to her Principal.
ThatRaw: How did it feel to have a music industry heavyweight go to such drastic measures to contact you?
Alyssa: It was surreal. I didn’t believe it at first. To be flown out to LA to meet Pharrell Williams and Jimmy Iovine was amazing. It was like an out of body experience.
ThatRaw: What advice do you have for young artists trying to get noticed?
Alyssa: A lot of people think that Justin Beiber blew up overnight but that isn’t the case. A lot of artists are signed for years until they get radio play. My album has been done for two years. It’s steps until you get to that crazy point. Stick with it. The online scene is blowing up, put out as many cover songs as you can to build a following. Viral videos and social networking will get your name out there.
ThatRaw: How do you describe your sound?
Alyssa: My album on iTunes says pop but it is more like a singer songwriter vibe. The album is very versatile and funky, there is jazz and soul. I love soul. My album, titled In Love Again for the First Time, was actually named by Jason Mraz. He is my one of my musical influences.
ThatRaw: How long have you been making music?
Alyssa: My whole family is into music. They are all musicians and jam out on every occasion. So I’ve been doing it my whole life.
ThatRaw: What are you concentrating on right now?
Alyssa: Right now, I am concentrating on promoting my music and getting my name out there. I expect a tour, especially after my album drops. I’m trying to release all of my music to the world. I feel like I’m ready.

I’m so happy to finally show you these pictures of Alyssa’s new photoshoot with her good friend, Emily Yanez. There’s only three, but I’m hoping Emily will post them all (or at least, a lot more), on her photography blog. Alyssa looks absolutely gorgeous, the pictures are fun and lighthearted and just so simply beautiful. I just can’t wait to see more!
